WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State volleyball team hit .238 with 45 kills and just 16 errors to sweep Southern Illinois in Missouri Valley Conference play Friday night in Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers (21-5, 11-2) led the entire first game, going on a 9 to 2 run to take a 19-9 lead over the Salukis (11-13, 6-8), eventually winning 30-18.
In game two, Southern held a 17-13 lead, but several unforced errors helped Wichita State climb back for a 30-25 victory.
The Salukis kept game three close, clawing their way to a 7-7 tie before a Shocker 12 to 4 run led to a 19-12 lead. WSU went on to win the game and match 30-19.
"Wichita State is a great team," Saluki head coach Brenda Winkeler said. "They have a lot of offensive weapons. Just when we started to shut one hitter down, they threw something else at us."
Johannah Yutzy led the Salukis hitting .321 in the match with a match-high 13 kills and just four errors. Kristie Berwanger added eight kills, while Haley Hann posted six. Hann also posted a match-high and a career-best 17 digs.
Saluki libero Kristy Elswick added 12 digs, bringing her season total to 487, second all-time at SIU for digs in a season, just 17 away from the record.
Chandra Roberson posted a match-high one solo and three block assists.
"We blocked and passed well," Winkeler added. "Serving errors hurt us. We tried to serve aggressively and we just had too many errors."
Southern out-blocked WSU 6.0 to 3.0, but 15 SIU service errors proved costly.
Stephanie Tokarz led the Shockers with 13 kills, while Sara Lungren added eight.
WSU put four players in double-digit digs including 16 from Lungren, 15 from Kelly Broussard, 11 from setter Abby Harsh and 10 from libero Melissa Granville. Overall, the Shockers out-dug the Salukis 64 to 55.
The Salukis return to action Saturday when they travel to Missouri State to face the Bears. The match starts at 7 p.m. and can be heard at www.thegrowl.missouristate.edu.
