Volleyball to host Evansville for spot in MVC Tournament

Last Week
Southern Illinois was swept over the weekend, dropping three straight games at Wichita State Friday, Nov. 3. Saturday, the Salukis were swept by Missouri State, falling to 11-14 on the season, 6-9 in the MVC.
This Week
SIU return home for the final two weekends of regular season play, hosting Evansville Friday. The Salukis are currently sixth in the MVC, while the Aces sit seventh. If the season ended today, SIU would secure a bid to the conference tournament. A loss to Evansville Friday would upset the Salukis' post-season bid.
The Purple Aces
Evansville, currently 11-15 overall and 10-2 in The Valley, currently sits behind SIU in the league standings.
Megan Spurlock (2.86 kpg) and Kerry Sylvester (2.57 kpg) lead the Aces at the net, while Julie Walroth is second in the league behind Saluki libero Kristy Elswick with 5.43 digs per game. Anne Teegardin is 11th in the league in hitting efficiency at .246 per game.
Salukis on the Radio
For the second straight season, Saluki volleyball games will be broadcast live from Davies Gym. All 11 of SIU's home games will be streamed live on WIDB The Remedy, SIU's only student-run radio station. Games heard on WIDB.net, www.siusalukis.com and via university cable Channel 5 in the SIU dorms. Volleyball coverage on WIDB.net included pre and post-game interviews with Saluki head coach Brenda Winkeler and a weekly spot on WIDB The Revolution's Wednesday evening and Saturday morning sports shows. Picked Sixth in Preseason Valley Coaches Poll
The Southern Illinois volleyball team was picked sixth in the 2006 MVC preseason coaches poll. The Salukis finished with 50 points, 16 behind Illinois State (66) in fifth. Defending regular season champion Wichita State was picked third with 77 points after losing four starters. Last season's tournament champion Missouri State is picked second with one first-place vote and 87 points. Northern Iowa was picked first with eight first-place votes and 96 points. The Panthers finished fourth a year ago, but brought in a top-25 recruiting class for the 2006 season.
Salukis post most wins since 2002
The Southern Illinois volleyball picked up their 11th of the season Saturday, Oct. 28 over Bradley, the most wins in a season for a SIU team since 2002 when the Dawgs went 23-10.
SIU, Marita, hold down Sycamores
Southern held Indiana State to just four points in game three of a four-game match Saturday, Oct. 21 at the ISU Arena, the lowest points allowed in a 30-point game in school history. The lowest point total a SIU team had allowed before that was in 2004 when the Salukis beat Wyoming 30-12 in the second game of a four-game match. Saluki setter Holly Marita served 21 straight to put SIU on top 20-0 to start the game. The senior tied a career-best six service aces, pitching in 53 assists and 26 digs for her 29th career double-double.
Elswick Ranked Nationally - ready to shatter record
Oct. 27 against UNI, Kristy Elswick's 17 digs propelled her into the Saluki record books again, this time, she climbed into the top-10 in digs in a career. She now has 978, ninth on the all-time list. The sophomore has recorded 497, just six digs away from the all-time record of 503. Her 5.65 dig per game averaged was ranked 18th in the nation last week.

Elswick also recorded 28 in a three-game match Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Flyer Classic against the Atlantic-10 West defending champion, Dayton, tying a career-best and school-record in a three-game match.
Winkeler records 100th Division I win
Southern Illinois head coach Brenda Winkeler's career recorded her 100th career victory with a big win over Bradley Friday, Sept. 29 in Peoria, 3-1. Winkeler is in her seventh year at the Division I level after five years at Eastern Illinois (82-72) and this her second year at Southern Illinois (21-30). The veteran coached 11 years at the junior college level at Parkland where she sits at 428-164-9 with a NJCAA National Championship in 1999.
Roberson Blocks with Best
Saluki middle blocker Chandra Roberson averages 1.34 blocks per game overall this season. With six block assists over the weekend, she climbed into the record books, ninth all-time for blocks in a season with 94. The freshman has helped SIU's blocking rank climb from seventh a year ago to third this season behind UNI and Missouri State. Roberson is the first Saluki since 1997 to have a block per game average above 1.3. The team's blocking average of 2.65 is the highest in school history, since the stat has been kept.

Roberson also led all hitters with 16 kills and just one error in 20 attempts in her first collegiate match to hit .750. The mark ranks tenth all-time in Saluki history and first in the league this season. It is the best performance at SIU since former-Saluki Jenny Noel hit .833 in 2000 in a match against Long Island.
Hann climbs up career record books
With two block assists over the weekend, senior right side Haley Hann moved up the career record books at SIU. She currently has 252, moving up one spot to eighth all-time. She is currently averaging 2.05 kills, 1.08 digs and 0.87 blocks on the season, on pace to have the best blocking season of her career. A four-year staple in the line up at right side, Hann reached the all-time list in career attempts half-way through her senior season. She currently has with 2684, eighth on the list.

J. Berwanger out for the season
Freshman outside hitter, Jennifer Berwanger, expected to make her way into the starting lineup this season, was seeing significant amounts of playing time at right side and defensive specialist before going down with a twisted knee at the Saluki Invitational against Belmont.
The younger of the Berwanger sisters on the team, Jennifer will miss the rest of the season with the injury, looking to return next season at full strength.
Best Start - Home Start - Since 2002
The Salukis beat IUPUI 3-1 in its first match of the season. It is the first time since 2002 that SIU won its first game of the season.
SIU garnered a three-game sweep of Austin Peay Friday, Sept. 8, in the Salukis' season opener and the second game of the 27th Saluki Invitational. It was the first home-opening win for the Salukis since they opened with a win over Central Michigan in 2002.
Yutzy Named to All-Tournament Team...Again...and Again
Saluki middle blocker Johannah Yutzy was named to all-tournament teams in all three of SIU's tournaments this season. The 2005 first-team All-MVC pick is currently hitting .290 on the season - third in the league, averaging 3.18 kills, 0.47 digs and 0.91 blocks per game.
Yutzy was named to the Flyer Classic All-Tournament Team after hitting .418 Aug. 25-26 with 38 kills and only 10 errors in 67 attempts, averaging 3.80 kills per game. The senior added 1 block solo and 10 block assists for a 1.10 average on the weekend.
The senior garnered Cowgirl Classic honors after hitting .355 with 42 kills and just 15 errors in 76 attempts Sept. 1-2 at Wyoming. She also added three block solos and eight block assists for a 0.85 average on the weekend.
She turned around a week later, Sept. 8-9 to capture 2006 Saluki Invitational All-Tournament honors hitting .228 with 22 and just nine errors in 57 attempts. She also added one solo and 14 block assists for a 1.67 average.
Marita Set-tles into the Books
Senior setter Holly Marita has recorded 274 assists so far this season to bring her career total to 3,588, second all-time at SIU. Marita recorded 30 assists against Wyoming Sept. 1 to pass Lisa Cummins with 3,249. Her 1, 231 assists during the 2004 season ranks seventh-best for a single season assist mark.

Seeing Double
Setter Holly Marita currently leads the team with 30 career double-doubles as a setter (assists, digs). Marita picked up a triple-double in 2003 against Iowa (10 kills, 51 assists, 12 digs). Junior outside hitter Ashley Saverine currently leads the team with nine career double-doubles (kills, digs), recording her last double-double against UMKC (16 kills, 11 digs) in 2004.
