CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University junior outfielder Kevin Koski was named this week's Missouri Valley Conference Player-of-the-Week, the league announced today.
Koski, who garnered the honor for the first time in his career, hit a scorching .556 (10-for-18) with seven runs, two doubles, six RBI and two walks to lead SIU to a four-game sweep of the Mid-American Conference West Division preseason favorite Central Michigan Chippewas (Feb. 23-26).
A native of Schaumburg, Ill., Koski matched a career-high four RBI to open the series and posted multiple-hits in all four games.
Since Koski's school record 36-game hitting streak ended on Feb. 11, he has simply been on fire. In fact, he hit 588 (20-for-34) with 15 runs, 11 RBI, three doubles, a triple, three walks and three stolen bases in his last seven games alone.
Not to mention, he struck out only once in 42 at-bats this season, as the lone strikeout (looking) came against the Chippewas on Feb. 25. Prior to Saturday, Koski had gone 35 consecutive at-bats without striking out.
Koski and the Salukis (8-1) are currently on a seven-game winning streak and off to their best start since 1970.
