Scoggins named MVC Pitcher of the Week

CARBONDALE, Ill - After picking up all three wins last weekend in the Southern Illinois University softball team's Missouri Valley Conference-opening series against Northern Iowa, junior pitcher Cassidy Scoggins was named MVC Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Scoggins pitched two complete game wins against the Panthers, beating UNI 12-0 in the first game and 8-0 in the third. She entered the second game in a relief effort for Ashley Hamby and struck out three of the five batters that she faced, helping SIU come from behind and beat Northern Iowa 6-5.
Scoggins is the first Saluki to earn one of the MVC's weekly honors this season. She was twice named MVC Pitcher of the Week during the 2005 season.
A native of Owasso, Okla., Scoggins leads SIU with a 0.99 ERA in her 71 innings pitched this season. She has struck out 84 batters while only walking 13.
The SIU softball team returns to action Wednesday as the team travels to Columbia, Mo. to face the University of Missouri Tigers. The rematch from last year's 2005 NCAA Tournament is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Missouri's University Field.
