CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team had a close match Saturday as they took on Indiana State at the Sports Blast. Unfortunately, the Salukis came up just short in their first conference match as the Sycamores took the 4-3 win.
The Salukis lost the doubles point and the first two singles matches putting them down 3-0. They managed to battle back to a 3-3 tie after wins from Sergio Sanchez, Andrei Bubnov and Nick Bauer.
Tomas Gonzalez went three sets in the game deciding match, but was unable to pull out the victory for SIU.
Tennis coach Dann Nelson thought the team had the match won.
"We got down early, like we have been doing lately," said Nelson. "But I thought once we won the next three matches Tomas would win as well."
The Salukis travel to Murray State Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match.
