CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team is still looking for their first Missouri Valley Conference win after falling to Missouri State Saturday 5-2 at Sports Blast.
The Salukis only wins came from Sergio Sanchez and Andrei Bubnov, who combined, have won their last 21 singles matches.
Sanchez won the number three singles match against Nenad Curcic in three sets (7-5, 5-7, 6-2), while Bubnov came from behind to defeat Marcos Queiroz at the number four spot (2-6, 6-3, 6-3).
"Sergio and Andrei won again, and that's a bright sport for us," said tennis coach Dann Nelson. "But we need more people to step up. Two singles wins is not enough."
With the loss, the Salukis drop to 9-6 overall and 0-2 in the MVC, while the Bears improve to 5-6 and 1-1.
"We came out flat in doubles and Missouri State just used that momentum into singles," said Nelson.
The Salukis will get another chance for their first MVC win tomorrow at 10 a.m. as they host Wichita State. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors at the University Courts, but if weather is bad they will move indoors to the courts at Sports Blast.
