CARBONDALE, Ill. - Saluki Athletics announced the hiring of Chet Savage on Tuesday as the department's Associate AD for External Operations.
Savage has worked the past five years in the University of Missouri department of athletics, including the last two as director of the Tiger Scholarship Fund.
At Mizzou, he was responsible for direct oversight of the department's annual giving program, which totaled cash gifts of more than $6.7 million last year. A member of the department's senior management team, he helped raise $122 million toward the school's recent capital campaign.
"We are very fortunate to have hired Chet Savage," said Saluki Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. "He is a very personable individual with a high-level work ethic."
Moccia said Savage will play an important role in the ongoing Saluki Way campaign that seeks to fund new athletic facilities, including a new football stadium and major renovation to SIU Arena.
"Chet is a former student-athlete, who understands what it takes to compete at the highest level," Moccia added. "Coupled with his seven years of athletic administration, he has a solid foundation upon which he can be successful."
Savage played baseball and was an Academic All-Big 12 performer in 1998 and 1999 at Kansas State. He earned a bachelor's degree in public relations from K-State in 2000 and a master's in administration in 2002.
Savage, 30, said he and and his wife, Rebekah, are looking forward to the move.
"I am honored at the opportunity to become part of a great team at SIU," Savage said. "Seeing the success Saluki student-athletes have experienced academically and athletically is very exciting, and I look forward to reaching new heights with them. Equally exciting is the University's commitment and vision for the future through the Saluki Way capital campaign."
He begins his new position at Southern on January 29.
