ST. LOUIS - Cross country's Jeff Schirmer has been selected as the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.
Schirmer receives the award following his individual title at the 2007 State Farm MVC Cross Country Championship at Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday, October 27.
The sophomore from Troy, Ill. helped SIU win its eleventh MVC title in school history with his 24:31.47 time in the 8K.
Schirmer, who has a 3.21 cumulative grade-point average in accounting, became the sixth different Saluki male runner to take an MVC individual cross country title dating back to 1983 and gave SIU its second-straight individual crown.
"Our continued corporate partnership with Prairie Farms provides an important vehicle by which to honor our top student-athletes," said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 20th year with The Valley. "Our student-athletes are the league's best representatives, and we're happy to recognize Jeff (Schirmer) for [his] athletic and academic achievements."
