CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois libero Kristy Elswick added a match-high 19 digs to her career total to break the SIU career mark helping her team to a 3-1 (30-21, 27-30, 30-21, 30-26) victory over Drake in Missouri Valley Conference play Friday night in Davies Gym.
Elswick ended the night with 1,356 digs, passing former Saluki standout Kristie Kemner who wrapped up her career with 1,355 in 2002.
Southern (11-6, 3-3 MVC), previously tied for sixth-place in The Valley even with the Bulldogs (5-12, 2-4 MVC) at 2-3 in league play, pulled themselves to .500 in conference play, tying last season's overall win total of 11.
The Salukis recorded one solo and 20 block assists, out-hitting the Bulldogs .218 to .106.
Middle blocker Chandra Roberson led the Salukis with 13 kills and six block assists, while Marina Medic recorded 11 kills, five digs and six block assists, moving to the right side to fill in for Kristie Berwanger, out with illness. Freshman Jasmine Conner filled in at middle blocker, recording four kills to go with one solo and four block assists.
Freshman Jennifer Berwanger recorded her third double-double in five matches at outside hitter with 11 kills, 13 digs.
Starting setter Brooklyn Robbins recorded 34 assists and 14 digs before coming out of the match in the middle of game three with injury. Erika Bartruff stepped in to wrap up the match dishing out 13 assists in the win.
Angela Bys led the Bulldogs with a match-high 24 kills and 13 digs on the night. Chelsea Lauersdorf pitched in a match-high 45 assists, 10 digs.
The Salukis return to action Saturday when they host Creighton at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym.
