ST. LOUIS - Cross country's Mohamed Mohamed has been selected as the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.
Mohamed receives the award following his 14th-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional at Peoria, Ill., on Saturday, Nov. 10.
The junior from Carol Stream, Ill. was SIU's top finisher at the Midwest Regional with a time of 30:28 in the 10K.
Mohamed, who has a 3.065 cumulative grade-point average in accounting, was the only MVC athlete to qualify for a spot at the NCAA Championship meet. Mohamed will travel to Terre Haute on Monday, Nov. 19 to compete for a national championship.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
"Our continued corporate partnership with Prairie Farms provides an important vehicle by which to honor our top student-athletes," said MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin. "Our student-athletes are the league's best representatives, and we're happy to recognize Mohamed (Mohamed) and Marcy (Gans) for their athletic and academic achievements."
