CARBONDALE, Ill. - With the regular season out of the way, the Southern Illinois University men's golf team is set to travel to Kansas City this weekend for the State Farm / Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
The State Farm/MVC Championship is a 54-hole tournament set to take place at Kansas City Country Club. The par-70 course plays at 6,672 yards.
Tournament action is set to begin Monday, April 23 with the first 36 holes and continue with the final 18 on Tuesday, April 24.
In the pre-conference poll, Southern Illinois was picked ninth with 22 votes, while Wichita State was unanimously picked first.
"We're taking a good group to Kansas City with us this week, led by Andrew Gwinup and Blake Driskell, so we should go out and have a good showing," said SIU head coach Leroy Newton.
Both Gwinup and Driskell are ranked in the top 30 in the Valley in scoring average.
The Salukis have finished in the top five in each of the past three years of the conference tournament.
Wichita State will be defending the championship title after beating Drake by two strokes and Southern Illinois by four in last year's tournament.
Chad Cooper finished on top for Southern Illinois, third overall, with a score of 216.
Play will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, April 23 with the second round to immediately follow. Tuesday's final round will begin with tee times starting at 8 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees.
