Men eighth, women ninth at Vanderbilt Track and Field Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois men's track team finished eighth, the women, ninth folloing competition at the Vanderbilt Invitational. The 26-team meet finished the distance events late Friday night before wrapping up competition Saturday at Vanderbilt Track.
Middle Tennessee State won both the men's and women's team titles. Vanderbilt finished second, Alabama third in the women's team race, while Memphis finished second and Eastern Illinois third for the men.
Distance runner Jeff Schirmer picked up the top finish for the men, winning the 3,000-meter run in 8:34.64.
Also in the running events, Jason Ordway finished third in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:27.40, while the SIU 4x400-meter relay finished eighth in 3:18.91.
The top finish in the field events included second-place finishes from both Antwon Stapleton and Joe Mueller. Stapleton jumped 50-04 in the triple jump, while Mueller threw 180-05 in the hammer throw and also finished ninth in the discus at 155-05.
Geoffrey Daniel picked up an eighth-place showing in the triple jump, with a best jump of 47-05.75. In the shot put, Brenton Siemons threw 54-10.25, good for third. Tom Smith finished the day with a top finish in the hammer throw scoring points with a seventh-place finish at 160-02. Smith also competed in the shot (13th/48-07.25), discus (10th/151-08) and javelin (15th/157-10).
Brittany Riley was the second Saluki to capture a meet title, winning the hammer with a toss of 216-04. She also finished second in the discus (160-09) and 13th in the shot put (43-01). In the javelin, Toni Whitfield finished eighth with a throw of 118-11.
In the jumps, Bianca Stuart finished third in the long jump with a leap of 19-05.25 and Judeka Adams scored a point for the Salukis, jumping 38-04.75 in the triple jump. Adams also finished 23rd in the long jump with a mark of 17-03.25.
Andrea Norris picked up the top finish in the women's running events, finishing fifth in the 100 in 11.85, while Ty Davis finished seventh in the 400 in 55.21.
In the distance events, A'Seret Dokubo ran 10:07.20 in the 3,000 for an eighth-place finish.
Saluki relay teams picked up two top-five finishes. The 4x100 relay finished third in 47.07 and the 4x400 team ran 3:43.49 for fifth.
The Saluki teams return to action April 27-28 at the Drake Relays. Those athletes not traveling to Des Moines, Iowa, will travel to Edwardsville, Ill., for the SIUE Twilight April 28.
