INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Two Southern Illinois programs have been honored as recipients of Public Recognition Awards, the NCAA announced Thursday.
Women's golf and softball received the honor for ranking in the top 10 percent of NCAA teams in their respective sports based upon the association's three-year Academic Progress Rates.
A team's APR is based upon eligibility and retention. Each student-athlete can earn two points per term, one for eligibility and one for returning to school.
If the student-athlete maintains eligibility and returns to school they will receive two points. If a student-athlete is eligible, but chooses to leave school, the school will lose one point. If a student-athlete lost eligibility and left school, the school loses two points.
Every student-athlete's score is added to come up with a team total and APR. While the NCAA will eventually require a four-year average score for each sport, the multi-year average only includes the 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years.
For the three-year period, SIU's women's golf team recorded a perfect 1,000 on the APR, while the Salukis' softball team tallied a 996.
