Softball lands six on MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Southern Illinois softball team placed six players on the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team the league announced Wednesday. The Salukis honored more athletes than any other school in The Valley and landed the most on the first team since 2001.
Amanda Clifton, Lauren Haas, Cassidy Scoggins, Ashley Hamby, Tiffanie Dismore and Krystal Stein were all named to the first team.
The six players honored have not been strangers to accolades this season. Clifton, Hamby, Dismore and Haas were also named to the CoSIDA / ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team.
Scoggins was selected to All-MVC First Team and MVC All-Tournament Team.
Clifton, a senior accounting major from St. Louis, has a 3.94 cumulative GPA. Playing mostly as a catcher, she has a .250 batting average with seven doubles and 21 runs batted in.
Haas, a junior marketing major from Bremerton, Wash., has a 3.74 cumulative GPA. A utility player, carries a .266 batting average with eight doubles, five home runs and 26 RBI.
Scoggins, a senior dietetics major from Owasso, Okla., has a 3.25 cumulative GPA. In 38 appearances in 2006, has a 21-9 record and a 1.80 ERA. She had 8 shut outs along with 209 strikeouts in 213.1 innings pitched.
Stein, a junior speech communications major from Nashville, Ill., has a 4.00 cumulative GPA. She is currently hitting .233 on the season with three doubles and two triples.
Hamby, a senior elementary education major from Arnold, Mo., has a 3.92 cumulative GPA. The pitcher carries a 1.55 ERA in 153.2 innings this season. In 30 appearances, she has recorded 17 wins and just five losses so far this season, recording 152 strikeouts.
Dismore, a junior radio-television major from Lafayette, Ind., has a 3.74 cumulative GPA. An outfielder, she has a .296 batting average with eight doubles, two triples and two home runs.
The SIU softball team has qualified for its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament, hosting the regional tournament Friday through Sunday, May 18-20. The Salukis have 40-14 record this season, finishing third in The Valley regular-season standings and second in the league tournament, falling to Creighton in the championship game.
