Stuart, Tatum named 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University student-athletes Jamaal Tatum and Bianca Stuart have been named 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education Magazine.
Tatum, a recent graduate of SIU and a guard on the men's NCAA Sweet Sixteen team, earned men's basketball first-team honors. The 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year carried a 3.58 grade point average in speech communication and public relations.
Stuart, a three-time Valley champion in the long jump, finished in the top-15 at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2007. The sophomore holds a 3.36 GPA in dental hygiene and was named to the women's track and field fourth team.
"We're proud of the accomplishments of Jamaal and Bianca," Assistant Athletic Director Kristina Therriault said. "They strive in the classroom as well as in their sports and are great representatives of Southern Illinois athletics."
The Sports Scholars Awards have been established to honor undergraduate students of color. To be nominated, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative GPA of at lease 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
