Hoelscher, Schirmer take top honors at Cross Country meet

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki Cross Country team kicked off its season today with the 2007 Southern Illinois Early Bird meet.
Freshman Megan Hoelscher took top honors, finishing the women's 4K with a time of 14:49.96. Finishing behind Hoelscher was last years' Early Bird champion, Nefeteri Williams, with a time of 15:10.65.
Emily Toennies, Toni Whitfield and Jamie Pfister rounded out the top five with times of 15:20.84, 15:33.76 and 15:33.76, respectively.
On the men's side, last years' runner-up, Jeff Schirmer, finished in first with a time of 19:38.59 in the 6K. Greg McBride finished on Schirmer's heels, taking second place with a time of 19:40.78. Kyle Kirchner, Dan Dunbar and Jason Brosseau rounded out the top five with time of 19:42.28, 19:42.40 and 19:43.34, respectively.
The Salukis return to action Sept. 14 with the EIU Panther Open in Charleston, Ill. The women will run a 5K beginning at 5:30 p.m., while the men will be competing in an 8K at 6 p.m.
