CARBONDALE, Ill. - Saluki Athletics has received a Citation Award from the Southern Illinois Chapter/American Institute of Architects (AIA) honoring the design of the Troutt-Wittmann Academic and Training Center, which opened in the fall of 2005.
On behalf of the AIA, lead project manager Eric Spencer of Image Architects presented the award to Saluki Director of Athletics Mario Moccia on Tuesday.
The two-story, 12,000-square-foot facility was recognized in the category for new construction between $2 million and $5 million. Troutt-Wittmann was built entirely with private funds, thanks to a $4.5 million gift from Saluki alum Pete Wittmann - the largest private donation in the history of the department of athletics.
"Pete's vision for a first-class academic and training facility has been fulfilled, and the building continues to enrich the lives of our student-athletes," Moccia said. "I accept this award on behalf of the many people whose hard work brought the project to fruition."
The center features a training center nearly three times larger than the previous athletics facility, allowing more athletes to train at one time. A separate wing of the building features a spacious computer lab, equipped with 30 flat-screen computers and adjoining study rooms.
