Volleyball falls to Illinois State in four

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois (8-4, 0-1 MVC) volleyball team dropped their Missouri Valley Conference opener to Illinois State (9-3, 1-0 MVC) in four games (30-25, 30-20, 26-30, 30-26) despite a record-setting crowd in Davies Gym Friday night.
The Redbirds recorded four double-doubles, putting four players in double-digit kills and five players in double-digit digs. Freshman outside hitter Mallory Leggett recorded a match-high 17 kills, adding 12 digs and two blocks to lead Illinois State.
Marina Medic led Southern with 12 kills and seven block assists, while Kristie Berwanger added 11 kills and 14 digs for her fourth double-double in five matches.
Chandra Roberson added 10 kills and Brooklyn Robbins hit a team-high .400 on the night with seven kills, adding 40 assists and eight digs. Saluki libero Kristy Elswick pitched in a match-high 19 digs.
On "Pack the Gym" night, Southern recorded a school-record 713 fans breaking the previous record of 668 fans.
The Salukis return to action Saturday at 7 p.m. against Indiana State. Saluki Athletics will be hosting a pre-match tailgate outside Davies Gym providing hot dogs and drinks to the first 300 fans.
