CARBONDALE, Ill. - No. 6 Southern Illinois University (4-0) set a single-game school record with 36 first downs and had 586 yards of total offense in a 58-3 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-3) earlier today in front of a crowd of 11,316 at McAndrew Stadium.
SIU never gave APB a chance, as it ran a lot of different things to keep the Golden Lion defense guessing.
"Everything was going our way today," said Saluki quarterback Nick Hill. "I was pleased with the flow and our coaches did a great job of calling the game."
Six Salukis scored touchdowns, six different Salukis carried the ball and 12 wide receivers caught passes in the team's largest offensive output of the season.
SIU scored 20 points in the second quarter to fuel a comfortable 30-0 lead at the half.
Kyle Dougherty's 29-yard field goal and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Hill to Phil Goforth gave the Dawgs a 10-0 cushion in the first quarter.
Deji Karim (37 yards), Joe Allaria (8 yards) and John Randle (10 yards) each scored rushing touchdowns to highlight the second quarter spree.
For Allaria, it was his first career TD.
"It felt good," said Allaria. "We're deep on offense and defense. Being able to keep them (APB) on their toes was a big part of our success today."
SIU registered 19 first downs and limited APB to only 51 yards of total offense (-18 rush; 69 pass) in the first half alone.
The Salukis continued to dismantle the Golden Lions in the second half, adding 14 more points in each of the final two quarters of the game.
Larry Warner scored from a yard out and Ryan Kernes hauled in a 2-yard pass from Hill to extend SIU's lead to 44-3 in the third quarter.
Richard White then scored a pair of rushing TDs to put the win on ice in the final 15 minutes. In his Saluki debut, White scored on a 1-yard run and broke free for a 26-yard scamper in the last 3:30 of the game.
Offensively, Hill completed 18-of-24 passes for 244 yards and two TDs.
Randle led a Saluki rushing attack which gained a season-high 314 yards on the day. He paved the way with 113 yards and one TD on 18 attempts. White followed with 64 yards on eight carries.
Randle returned after missing the Southern Utah game due to an injured ankle.
"My ankle felt good and it was great to be back out there," he said. "
Receiving wise, Phil Goforth, Justin Allen and Jeff Evans had a game-high three receptions. Goforth finished with 74 yards and one TD, while Allen and Evans added 64 and 36 receiving yards, respectively.
Defensively, the Dawgs were just as dominant.
SIU limited APB to only three points, which came via a 38-yard field goal by John Heflin with 10:07 left to play in the third quarter.
It was the least amount of points the Salukis have allowed in a game since shutting out Southern Utah, 59-0, last season.
APB was held to under 300 yards (299) of total offense, including a dismal 57 on the ground.
Chauncey Mixon had a busy day, recording a season-high 11 tackles, two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.
SIU opens Gateway Conference play at Indiana State on Sept. 29.
"I was pleased with the way we played today," said Saluki head coach Jerry Kill. "Now, we have to prepare ourselves for conference play. It's good to be heading into next week at 4-0."
