CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois outside hitter Jennifer Berwanger was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week the league announced Wednesday.
Berwanger, a freshman from Lake Zurich, Ill., averaged 4.67 kills, 4.00 digs and 0.33 blocks in a three-game sweep of Evansville Friday. She led the Salukis with the third double-double of her career, a match-high 14 kills, 12 digs and a block assist, hitting .522 in the match with just two errors in 23 attempts.
Berwanger is the first Saluki since 2002 to claim a Valley weekly honor. Former SIU standout Kristie Kemner was named MVC Player of the Week Oct. 7, 2002.
