Volleyball makes clean sweep of Western Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois (5-2) volleyball team hit .313 and put three players in double-digit kills en route to a three-game sweep of Western Illinois (1-7), 30-25, 30-15, 30-25, in the Salukis' home opener in Davies Gym Wednesday night.
Kristie Berwanger led the Salukis with 14 kills, hitting .500 on the night with just one error in 26 attempts at the net. The junior right side hitter added two solo and two block assists.
Middle blockers Chandra Roberson and Marina Medic added 12 kills each, Roberson hitting a match-high .550 with just one error to go with two solo and two block assists.
Setter Brooklyn Robbins recorded 43 assists, while Kelsie Laughlin and Kristy Elswick combined for 31 digs on the night.
Offensively, SIU recorded just 14 errors in 115 attempts at the net. They out-hit WIU 50 to 29, holding the visitors to 29 kills on the night.
The Salukis will host the 28th Saluki Invitational Friday and Saturday opening with Cleveland State Friday (7 p.m.). Saturday, SIU will face UMKC (12 p.m.) and Murray State (7 p.m.).
