CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Southern Illinois' Jayme Sweere scored a team-high 21 points to become the first Saluki since 2003 to hit the 1,000-point scoring mark, but it wasn't enough to help her team overcome a frigid 30 percent shooting performance from the field, falling at Northern Iowa, 64-52, Thursday night in Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Salukis (7-11, 3-5 MVC) led by as many as four in the first half of play, 20-16, on a jumper by Tanaeya Worden with 10:46 left in the period.
The Panthers answered with two straight jumpers to tie the game at 20-all.
With 1:52 left in the period, an Erica Smith layup put SIU up one, 30-29, before UNI went on a 7-0 run to end the half and take a six-point lead into the locker room at the half.
Smith's bucket put the Salukis up for the final time in the contest, the Panthers controlling the second half. SIU came within one 40-39, with 15:37 left to play on a Smith layup, but would not get any closer as UNI took their largest lead of 13, with just under two minutes to play.
The Salukis were 19-of-62 from the field for 30.6 percent from the field, including 23.5 percent (8-of-34) in the second half.
Along with Sweere, Smith added 13 points to go with 11 rebounds for her second career double-double.
Jacqui Kalin led the Panthers with 21 points. The freshman was teammates a year ago with SIU's Worden as the two teamed up to win the Iowa Class 4A state title for Sioux City North High School.
Lizzie Boeck and Danielle Wubbens added 18 and 10 points for UNI respectively.
The Southern Illinois bench scored just four points, the lowest total of the season, all four points put up by Worden.
Sweere became the first Saluki since head coach Dana Eikenberg took over the team in 2004 to reach the 1,000-point mark. She is the 19th SIU player in program history to make the list.
