CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University volleyball team is back at home this weekend as they host Evansville Friday, Oct. 24 and non-conference opponent South Dakota on Saturday, Oct. 25. Friday night is Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Davies Gym as the Salukis raise awareness in a "Dig for the Cure" match.
Fans who show up to the match wearing pink will receive $1 admission to Friday night's match. Those in attendance can pledge $1 for every dig recorded throughout the match with proceeds being donated to the Breast Center, a division of Southern Illinois Healthcare. The Salukis are excited to take part in National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and hope the Southern Illinois community will come out to support the fight against breast cancer.
"We have team members that have been affected by the disease," said head coach Brenda Winkeler. "I hope people come out and support a great cause."
The Salukis are 12-7 overall this season, 3-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference. This marks SIU's second meeting with Evansville this season, and as the season has reached the halfway point the team is looking to gain some momentum heading into the second half of the season. Southern Illinois is currently No. 7 in the MVC standings, just behind Illinois State and Evansville.
"Evansville will be a big match," Winkeler said. "We're going in to the second half of the season and we've come close to the top. It's now time to take those close matches and turn them into victories."
The first 50 fans in attendance to Friday's "Dig for the Cure" match against Evansville will receive a free pink t-shirt. Match times for Friday and Saturday are set for 7 p.m. at Davies Gymnasium.
