CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki men's golf team concludes their fall season Monday and Tuesday at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.
SIU, which has finished in the top five in three out of its first four tournaments with two victories, will look to end the fall on a high note at the par-72, 7,304-yard Waterchase Golf Club.
"This will be a competitive tournament, but we just want to focus on finishing strong to regain the confidence we had at the beginning of the fall," said head coach Leroy Newton.
The Salukis moved up two spots in the final day to take fourth place out of 15 teams last year at the event hosted by the University of Texas-Arlington.
Senior Todd Obergoenner also tied for fifth with a 1-under-par 215 to lead Southern Illinois individually.
In addition to host UT-Arlington, SIU will face Missouri Valley Conference opponents Creighton, Drake and Missouri State.
Also included in the field are Centenary, Eastern Michigan, Houston Baptist, Louisiana Tech, Nicholls State, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, South Alabama, Texas State, UMKC, and UT-Pan American.
The 54-hole tournament begins on Monday with 36 holes and wraps up on Tuesday with an 18-hole final round.
"Four out of the seven on the team played in this tournament last year, which should help," said Newton. "Ultimately though we're just ready to get back at it after being off last week."
