FORT WORTH, Texas - The Saluki men's golf team shot a final-round 4-over 292 Tuesday to finish second at the 16-team UTA/Waterchase Invitational.
SIU stood in 10th place heading into the final 18 holes, but used the second-best final-round score of the tournament to move all the way up into a tie for fifth with University of Texas-Northwood at 908.
"We responded today with much better golf, and I'm proud we fought through till the end," said head coach Leroy Newton. "We'll learn from this, and remember the way we finished as motivation for the spring."
The top five finish was the Salukis' fourth out of five tournaments they competed in this fall.
Host team UT-Arlington fired a final round 289 to claim the overall team title with an even-par 864.
The rest of the top four finished tightly packed just in front of SIU with Texas State (905), Oklahoma City (906), and Oklahoma Christian (907) taking second, third and fourth overall.
Southern Illinois also finished in front of the three other MVC teams competing with Drake (913) in ninth, and Missouri State (316) and Creighton (964) finishing 12th and 15th.
Senior John Danielson led the Salukis with a career-best fourth place finish individually. The Marshalltown, Iowa native shot a final-round 2-over-par 74 for a 54-hole season-low total of 2-over 218.
Senior Phillip Collier also moved into the top 10 with a tied career-low 4-under-par 68 in the final round. Collier finished with a 6-over 222 to tie for ninth place.
Senior Todd Obergoenner finished tied for 39th with a 232, and junior Patrick Scheil shot a 1-over 73 to tie for 59th with a 236.
Junior Blake Driskell and freshman Luke Daily also both tied for 66th as individual participants with 54-hole totals of 241.
SIU wrapped up the fall with two victories, a fourth place, tie for fifth and sixth place in five tournaments, and will open the spring season at the Samford Intercollegiate in Limestone Springs, Ala. March 9-10, 2009.
