Louisville, Ky. - Jeff Schirmer and Emily Toennies paced their respective teams as the SIU cross country teams took home the men's first place trophy as well as placing fourth in the women's race at the Louisville Classic.
Head coach Matt Sparks said keeping the team score down on the men's side and working together helped the Salukis take home the team championship over 33 other competiting schools.
"We just took care of business and obviously it turned out well," Sparks said.
Jeff Schirmer finished third overall in the Gold Division, running his best time of the season and finishing the 8K course in 23:49.95 while Dan Dunbar finished in 12th place (24:19.32).
Sparks said it was good for Schirmer and the rest of the team to finally see some competition and different schools in a race.
Jason Ordway (19th 24:30.14), Mark Bowman (27th 24:39.05), Kyle Kirchner (29th 24:42.21) Brad Wrage (69th 25:22.55), Tyler Bradford (70th 25:23.41), Neal Anderson (75th 25:26.35), and Logan Block (109th 25:48.95) rounded out the top finishers for SIU.
The women's team also saw some success as they finished fourth, just four points out of third place, with Emily Toennies finishing in 27th place with a time of 18:10.65, which is also her best on the year.
"Coming into the meet I thought if we would make the top five it would be that nice, but coming so close to second was kind of disappointing too," Sparks said.
Megan Hoelscher came in next for the Salukis finishing 34th with a time of 18:19.09 and followed by Jamie Pfister (48th 18:33.65) and A'Seret Dokubo (49th 18:33.98),
Other finishers for SIU included Ryan Eichelberger (58th 18:37.90), Toni Whitfield (102nd 19:09.45), Kim Bearwood (118th 19:20.42), Nikura Walls (135th 19:38.93) and Kristian Baldwin (19:47.39).
SIU will return to action on Oct. 18 in Evansville, Ind. as they participate in the Evansville Invitational.
