Carbondale, Ill. - The SIU cross country teams will head to Stillwater, Okla. on Saturday as they will compete in the NCAA Regional hosted by Oklahoma State.
The men's squad is coming off a second consecutive team title at the MVC Championships on Nov. 1 and finished the season ranked No. 5 in the USTFCCCA regional polls.
Head coach Matt Sparks said his team needs to perform better than their championship performance two weeks ago if they want to earn a bid to nationals.
"In order for our team to have a realistic chance to be one of the 31 teams to compete in Terre Haute at the NCAA Championships we must be top 4," Sparks said.
The women, who finished fourth in the MVC Championships will also look to send a few runners to the national meet.
They will be led by Megan Hoelscher, who finished highest for the Salukis at the MVC Championships grabbing at 12th place finish.
"The ladies have taken some big steps and really improved from last year and we need to continue that trend," Sparks said.
The meet will kick off the 6,000 meter race at 11:00 a.m while the men's 10,000 will follow at approximately 11:45 a.m.
