CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team fell to Creighton in three straight sets Friday night (19-25, 16-25, 21-25). The Salukis are now 5-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference, 15-11 overall. Creighton improved to 12-3 conference play, 15-8 overall.
Chandra Roberson went 8 for 17 to lead the Salukis in hitting with .353. Brooklyn Robbins recorded her 29th career double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs. Senior libero Kristy Elswick led the team in digs with 18, while Kelsie Laughlin and Jennifer Berwanger each posted 11 of SIU's 62 digs. J. Berwanger led the team in kills, posting nine, Roberson was right behind with eight. As a team the Salukis hit .083 posting 33 kills, 62 digs and 5.0 blocks.
"We struggled offensively," said head coach Brenda Winkeler. "We were able to manage more kills in sets two and three but our errors increased. Digging wise we were only behind by ten, but the offense was our story tonight, we just never really made a run at them."
SIU is in the race with Illinois State for the No. 6 spot in the league for an appearance at the MVC Tournament. The Redbirds defeated Indiana State last night to improve their record to 7-9 in the MVC. Illinois State will take the weekend off before hosting Southern Illinois and Evansville next weekend.
The Salukis will be back in action at home Saturday night to host Drake. Tomorrow is Senior Night as Erika Bartruff, Kristie Berwanger, Kristy Elswick, and Brooklyn Robbins play their final match in Davies Gym. There will be a tribute to the four seniors followed by a 7:10 p.m. matchup against the Bulldogs.
