Volleyball defeats Indiana State in final match of the season

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team defeated Indiana State in their last match of the season. The Salukis downed the Sycamores 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19).
"We had great team efforts," said head coach Brenda Winkeler. "We blocked well and had four players in double-digits."
The Salukis improved to 17-12 overall, 7-11 in the MVC, while Indiana State dropped to an overall record of 8-23, 2-16 in the MVC. Kristie Berwanger, Chandra Roberson, Jennifer Berwanger and Kelsie Laughlin reached double digits, combining for 46 of the team's 58 kills on the night. Laughlin's 13 kills and 12 digs gave the junior her second double-double of the season. Senior libero Kristy Elswick posted 19 kills, giving her 1,930 career kills, the all-time leader in Saluki history.
As a team, the Salukis hit .228, holding the Sycamores to .162. SIU led in every category recording 66 digs, 52 assists and nine service aces. Southern wraps up the season 17-12 overall, 7-11 in the Missouri Valley Conference, after beginning the season 9-1 for the best season start in school history.
"I'm proud of the team's accomplishments," said Winkeler. "It was good to end the season on a positive note."
