WICHITA, Kan. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team dropped their match against No. 11 Wichita State, 3-1.
The Shockers (25-0, 14-0 MVC) took the first two sets from the Salukis (15-9, 5-8 MVC), grabbing an early 2-0 lead. SIU answered in the third with a 25-22 victory over the No. 11 ranked team in the country.
"We came out flat the first set and didn't do a good job of staying focused and following the game plan," said head coach Brenda Winkeler. "In the third set we were able to do some things we had talked about and take some hits from them."
Senior Kristie Berwanger went 10 for 21, hitting .429 to lead the Salukis. Jennifer Berwanger captured her 21st career double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs. Brooklyn Robbins recorded 34 assists and 12 digs, recording her 27th double-double. As a team the Salukis hit .136, posting 8.0 blocks, 42 kills and 62 digs. SIU will head to Springfield, Mo. to face Missouri State on Saturday.
"We definitely need to go in there and have a good night offensively in order to win that match," Winkeler said.
The Salukis are currently sit in seventh place in the MVC standings, just behind Illinois State an Evansville. Tomorrow SIU will face Missouri State who is currently No. 4 in the Valley, one match behind Creighton.
