CARBONDALE, Ill. - Wide receiver Marc Cheatham and fullback John Goode represent Southern Illinois University on the 2008 Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team, released Wednesday.
Cheatham, who hails from Oakland, Calif., caught 29 passes for 369 yards and two touchdowns as SIU's second-leading receiver this season. He made four of his grabs for a career-high 103 yards and scored both of his TDs against Missouri State (Oct. 25). He also had the game-winning 51-yard TD reception on the final play against the Bears. Cheatham played in all 12 games, starting each of his last eight contests.
Goode, who was redshirted as a true freshman, took over as the Salukis' starting fullback this year. A native of Olive Branch, Miss., he saw action in every game, while making six starts. Goode caught eight passes for 58 yards, averaging 7.2 yards per reception.
Youngstown State swept the league's top newcomer honors, with quarterback Brandon Summers taking Newcomer of the Year and running back Kamryn Keys winning Freshman of the Year. It marked the first time in six seasons and only the second time in conference history, players from the same school earned these awards.
