SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Southern Illinois University (13-9, 3-2) scored five runs in the fifth inning to key a wild 8-7 win over Missouri State (16-7, 3-2) earlier tonight at Hammons Field.
SIU nearly blew an eight-run lead when MSU put up four runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
The Salukis led 8-0 after five and a half innings, but the Bears started their comeback with three runs in the bottom half of that frame. SIU submarine reliever Ian Reinhart then took the mound in the ninth and gave up a RBI-double, hit a batter and allowed a three-run homer to Ben Carlson, as MSU sliced the lead to 8-7.
Reinhart gave way to Bryant George, who struck out Josh Mazzola en route to his second save of the season.
SIU's fifth inning proved to be huge in the end.
Adam Hills drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a wild pitch. Mark Kelly singled and Hills scored. Bret Maugeri's base hit moved Kelly to second. Kelly came around to score on Tyler Bullock's ensuing double. Aaron Roberts was then hit by a pitch, before Owen Mackedon, Chris Murphy and Scott Elmendorf each knocked in a run to give SIU a 7-0 lead.
The Salukis scored once more when Roberts doubled home Kelly with two outs in the sixth. SIU sent a total of 15 men to the plate in the fifth and sixth innings.
Shawn Joy (3-2) earned the win after giving up three runs on nine hits. Joy also struck out two, walked three and tossed six scoreless innings.
Buddy Baumann (2-2) took the loss for MSU. Baumann allowed four hits and four runs, struck out seven and walked three in four innings.
All nine of SIU's starters got a hit, as the Salukis pounded out 11 on the night. Kelly and Mackedon paved the way with two hits each. Both Kelly (1) and Mackedon (2) accounted for three RBI, as well.
Carlson and Ryan Mantle each had three hits for the Bears.
SIU and MSU wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 p.m., CST. Righthander David Kington (1-0) will take the hill.
