CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois junior Mark Bowman has been selected to participate in the 2008 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Development Conference held in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. in May.
Bowman, a member of the SIU cross country team, was one of 700 student-athletes selected from a pool of 1,804 nominations from 462 institutions.
"It is a real honor for Mark to be chosen to represent SIU at the NCAA leadership conference," said head cross country coach Matt Sparks. "Mark came to SIU as a quiet, introverted young person and it is a real testament to our system of developing the entire individual that has allowed Mark to grow into the type of leader that will represent us at this conference."
The annual leadership conference was created by the NCAA in 1996 to provide a diverse group of the nation's top student-athletes an opportunity to actively participate in activities that will enable them to become better leaders on their campuses and in their communities.
Each school nominated four student-athletes who have demonstrated an ability or strong desire to be leaders and would benefit from a significant leadership experience. In order to be eligible, applicants must be in good academic standing and must have athletics eligibility remaining in the following academic year.
Saluki softball player Krystal Stein represented the SIU athletic department in 2007.
The 2008 conference will be held at Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts from May 27-29.
