ST. LOUIS - The Missouri Valley Conference announced junior Todd Obergoenner (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Cape Central HS) as the MVC Men's Golfer of the Week on Wednesday for his play at the ASU Indian Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. Obergoenner tied for second overall with a career-best, and the third-lowest 54-hole total in men's golf history at 12-under-par 204.
Obergoenner opened the tournament on Monday, at the par-72, 6,903-yard Sage Meadows Golf Club, with a 4-under 68, and 3-under-par 69 to sit tied for sixth at 7-under heading into the final round on Tuesday.
Obergoenner moved up the leaderboard in the final day, and went on to exceed Monday's opening day success to fire a final-round 5-under-par 67, which tied the SIU record for the lowest third round score in program history.
Obergoenner's second place finish was also a career-best, and helped the team secure the third-lowest 54-hole team total in school history at 13-under-par 851.
This is Obergoenner's first golfer of the week award, and second time this season a Saluki men's golfer has been honored by the conference. Sophomore Jordan Cox was named golfer of the week last fall on Sept. 19 after winning the individual medalist at the JSU National Invitational in Tunica, Miss.
Southern Illinois will be back in action this weekend at the Fighting Illini Spring Invite in Champaign, Ill. April 12-13, before closing out the season at the MVC Championship April 21-22.
