CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois head volleyball coach Brenda Winkeler announces Katie Carrier as a new assistant coach Thursday for the 2008 season. Carrier will take the position as the second assistant coach behind third-year assistant Julie Yankus.
"We are excited to add Katie to the Saluki volleyball staff," Winkeler said. "She brings collegiate coaching and playing experience and she has been a proven competitor and winner."
Carrier, a native of Wauwatosa, Wis., has been an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville since August, 2007 where she helped lead the Cougars to a 27-7 overall record and a 17-2 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
"I am honored to take on the Saluki name and look forward to charging through this next season with Brenda as head coach," Carrier said. "My experience as a player and coach will only be heightened by joining the Saluki program's coaching staff."
At SIUE, the team produced three all-conference and one all-region and All-American, reaching the first Division II top-10 ranking in program history.
Prior to her stint at SIUE, Carrier was an assistant coach at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. where she was also a collegiate player. She was previously the head coach of the Green Bay Hang Time Volleyball Club in November 2003 to June 2004.
As a collegiate student-athlete from 1998-2001, Carrier excelled as a four-time first team Midwest Conference selection, including Player of the Year as a freshman. She was also selected All-Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association her senior year.
Holding every hitting record at St. Norbert, Carrier also made a splash on the national scene. Her name is among all-time NCAA Division III national leaders in kills (2,296), kills per game (4.59), attempts per game (10.85) and digs (2,015).
She earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from St. Norbert and earned membership in Lambda Pi Eta, a national communication honor society.
