McGee, Dokubo named 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois track and field athlete A'Seret Dokubo and swimming and diving athlete Gareth McGee were honored as 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars named by the Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine in the May 29 issue.
Dokubo, a sophomore from Schaumburg, Ill., was one of 25 athletes named to the women's track and field first team. A member of both the track and field and cross country teams at SIU, she is a radio/television major and carries a 3.94 cumulative grade point average. This spring she was named to the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team.
McGee, a senior, carries a 3.91 GPA in Microbiology and earned one of 12 spots on the men's swimming first team. The Johannesburg, South Africa native, a two-time All-Sun Belt honoree, competed in the back and individual medley events for the Salukis.
"We are proud to have two student-athletes receive this academic honor, they are both deserving of the award," Assistant Athletic Director Kristina Therriault said. "Gareth and A'Seret are both tremendous leaders in the classroom, community and on their respective teams."
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2; and b e active on their campuses or in their communities.
