MUNCIE, Ind. - Southern Illinois swept Tennessee Tech in their final match at the Ball State Tournament, 3-0 (25-20-, 25-21, 25-23). The defeat over the Golden Eagles (2-4) earned the Salukis (5-1) their fourth sweep of the season.
"It was a good win," said head coach Brenda Winkeler. "They are very scrappy on defense and really pushed us in the third set. But we showed that we could come back."
Jennifer Berwanger led the team with 11 kills and 11 digs, recording her third double-double of the season. Chandra Roberson was right behind with 10 kills and Sydney Clark tallied nine kills for SIU. Brooklyn Robbins picked up her 12th career double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. Marina Medic hit .462 contributing seven kills for the Saluki win.
"Chandra Roberson and Marina Medic did very well," said Winkeler. "Brooklyn did a great job setting as well."
J. Berwanger and Robbins' performances this weekend earned them each a spot on the all-tournament team. Other members include Kelli Miller (Purdue - MVP), Stephanie Lynch (Purdue), Danita Merlau (Purdue), Katie Kenline (TTU), and Julie Breivogel (Ball State).
The team will travel back to Carbondale and spend the week preparing for their home-opener next weekend.
"Everyone is excited, especially the new kids," Winkeler said. "We are really looking forward to playing in our own gym in front of our fans."
SIU will face Western Illinois, Arkansas State, and SEMO as they host the Hampton Inn Saluki Invitational Sept. 12-13.
