DAWG BITES
The Southern Illinois Volleyball team is in its 52nd year of existence... Head Coach Brenda Winkeler is in her fifth season with the team and holds a 66-69 (.489) record... Last season the Salukis finished with a 17-12 record and were 7-11 in MVC play, finishing in seventh... The Salukis started the 2009 season 10-0 in non-conference play, the best start in school history.
ON THE SCHEDULE THIS WEEK
The Salukis take a break from conference play to travel to Southeast Missouri State Tuesday, Oct. 20, before returning to Valley play Friday and Saturday when they host Bradley and UNI, both matches at 7 p.m.
SCOUTING SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE
The Redhawks entered the 2009 season with four returning starters plus their libero and nine returning letterwinners. SEMO, led by Renata Nowacki in her fifth season, recorded a 13-14 record overall last year and a fifth-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference (11-7). This season the Redhawks are 8-12 overall and 8-12 in the OVC, currently on a two-match win streak. SEMO is led by Karleigh Delong with 3.41 kills and 2.98 digs per set. Emily Hughes adds 3.20 kills and 0.68 blocks per set. Kelly Benacka leads the defense with 3.16 digs per set.
SERIES WITH SEMO
SIU leads the series with SEMO, 17-10. The Salukis have taken five of the last six meetings with the Redhawks dating back to 2002.
PERFECT IN NON-CONFERENCE
The 2009 Saluki volleyball team started non-conference play, 10-0, the best season start in program history. The Salukis travel to Southeast Missouri State Tuesday, Oct. 20, in their final non-conference and lone mid-week match of the season to see if they can stay perfect in non-conference play.
SALUKIS LOOK TO END SKID
The Southern Illinois volleyball team has currently lost four matches in a row, for the first time since 2007. The Salukis lost to Missouri State and Wichita State Oct. 9-10 and Drake and Creighton Oct. 16-17. The Salukis face Southeast Missouri State Tuesday, Oct. 20 in hopes of snapping the streak.
ROBERSON CRACKS CENTURY MARK
With three solo blocks over the weekend, Chandra Roberson hit the century mark, posting her 99th, 100th and 101st block solo of her career. She currently ranks fifth all-time at SIU, 29 solo blocks away from fourth.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Salukis dot the top-60 national rankings the fifth week of release in two categories. The team ranks 40th in the nation in blocks per set (2.47) and Rachael Brown ranks 60th in assists per set (10.49).
BERWANGER RETURNS
Junior outside hitter Jen Berwanger returns after landing on the first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference last season. As a sophomore, she put up impressive numbers that landed her in the top-10 in SIU single-season history in digs (434, 7th), kills per set (3.64, 10th), attempts per set (10.31, 2nd) and attempts (1103, 5th). Berwanger currently ranks sixth in career attempts per set (7.63). This season she leads the team averaging 3.47 kills and 3.43 digs per set.
