Women's Basketball falls at Northern Illinois, 74-65

DEKALB, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team put three players in double-digits led by a career-best 20 points from Teri Oliver, but couldn't overcome foul trouble and missed free throws, falling in the Huskies' Convocation Center, 74-65, Sunday afternoon.
The Salukis (0-3) started off hot, leading by as many as nine at the 14-minute mark, 11-2, holding the Huskies (3-1) scoreless from the field until Kylie York made a 3-pointer at 13:36 for NIU. The Huskies were 0-for-8 from the field until that basket.
The Huskies bounced back tying the game and posting their first lead of the contest on two free throws at the 3:46 mark in the first half.
NIU held a one-point lead at the break, 30-29, with 13 of their first-half points coming at the free throw line.
The Huskies started the second half on a 6-to-0 run, and the Salukis answered with their own six-point run with back-to-back layups by Eboni Crayton, Oliver and Stephany Neptune, but couldn't power back to take the lead.
With four and a half minutes left in regulation, the Huskies would use two of their 23 second-half free throws to pull ahead by 10, 59-49. NIU followed with a layup to take a 12-point lead their largest of the contest.
The Salukis wouldn't give up, using three clutch 3-pointers from Oliver to pull within four, 66-62, with 38 seconds left in the game.
SIU would send NIU to the free throw line 10 times in the final 30 seconds of the contest, the Huskies converting eight of their free shots. The Salukis turned the ball over twice and both teams combined for three technical fouls in the final seconds of the game, the Huskies coming away with the nine-point victory.
Northern was 36-of-45 from the free throw line on the day, while Southern converted 15 of its 24 free shots. The teams combined for 50 fouls.
Along with Oliver's 20 points, Neptune recorded a near triple-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists to go with a block and two steals. Crayton finished with 12 points and four boards, while Katrina Swingler added eight points, six rebounds and three steals.
Mauvolyene Adams finished the day with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for the Huskies, while Marke Freeman finished with 17 points and six rebounds, 13-of-14 from the free throw line before fouling out.
The Salukis return home to host Western Michigan Wednesday, Nov. 25. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
