WACO, Texas - The American Football Coaches Association announced Wednesday that Southern Illinois head coach Dale Lennon has been selected as the Football Championship Subdivision Region IV Coach of the Year.
Lennon has led the Salukis to an 11-1 record so far this season and a No. 1 national ranking by The Sports Network. He was also voted as the 2009 Missouri Valley Football Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
He said that this honor is a reflection of the entire football coaching, strength and conditioning and office staff.
Lennon has coached his teams to seven-straight playoff appearances, five at North Dakota and the last two at SIU. The Salukis won the 2009 MVFC Championships and became the first team in league history to go 8-0 in conference play. SIU enters Saturday's quarterfinal game against William & Mary having won 11-straight games.
The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association's five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
The winners are selected by Active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions. The 2009 Regional Coach of the Year winners will be recognized at the AFCA Coach of the Year Dinner at the 2010 AFCA Convention in Orlando, Fla. The dinner is scheduled for January 12.
