CARBONDALE, Ill. - The No. 24 Saluki softball team will continue play this weekend at the Bulldog Bash hosted by Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
The tournament will consist of a double round robin against Gardner-Webb and Austin Peay, while host team Samford had to drop out due to family emergencies with three of its players.
Southern Illinois will face Gardner-Webb for the first time in the program's history to start the tournament on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. CT, and take on Austin Peay at 4 p.m. CT.
On Sunday, the Salukis will go up against Gardner-Webb and Austin Peay again at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
SIU holds a 12-0 all-time record against Austin Peay and swept a doubleheader during the team's last meeting in 1991.
Southern Illinois will likely be without starting freshman shortstop Haley Gorman and sophomore starting pitcher Danielle Glosson due to injuries.
"During the course of a long season these are things you have to deal with," said head coach Kerri Blaylock. "We just have continue to move forward and play hard."
Gorman is tied for second on the team with a .364 batting average and Glosson was named this week's State Farm MVC Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 with 19 strikeouts to start the season.
The Salukis opened the 2009 season with a 4-0 record at the Cathedral City Kickoff in Palm Springs, Calif last weekend. Following the undefeated start, SIU moved into the USA Today/NFCA top 25 for the first time since 2007.
