Volleyball celebrates 2008 season at annual banquet

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University volleyball team celebrated their 2008 season at Bleyer's Lodge Saturday at their annual banquet.
Jennifer Berwanger was named MVP, Chandra Roberson grabbed the Best Blocker award, and Brookyln Robbins earned the 110% award as the team gathered to celebrate their successful 2008 season.
Head coach Brenda Winkeler made big strides in the SIU volleyball program during her fourth season with the Salukis. Winkeler led the team to a 17-12 overall record, 7-11 in the Missouri Valley Conference, marking the team's best record in six years. In addition, an early 9-1 start, gave SIU the best start to a season in school history.
The team entered the record books 14 times this season, most notably Kristy Elswick ends her career first in career digs with 1,930. Roberson moved up to No. 4 in school history with 298 block assists and tied for ninth with 71 solo blocks. Robbins recorded 2,247 assists her two years at SIU, putting her at the No. 7 spot in school history.
The Salukis garnered two All-MVC selections this year, with J. Berwanger being named All-MVC First Team and Robbins earned All-MVC Second Team. J. Berwanger also earned a spot on the All-MVC Scholar Athlete First Team and Elswick was named honorable mention.
