CITRUS SPRINGS, Fla. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team finished ninth with a 957 (322-312-323) at the El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citrus Springs, Fla. The tournament was hosted by Eastern Kentucky and took place at the El Diablo Golf & Country Club.
Ball State remained in first place for the tournament title, while James Madison and Florida Atlantic tied for second place. The University of Indianapolis finished fourth, St. John's grabbed a fifth-place finish, and USC Upstate finished in sixth place. Murray State and Florida Gulf Coast tied for seventh, only four strokes ahead of SIU.
"I was happy with our 312 yesterday," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "I thought we could bring it back up, but we didn't."
Although the team may have not finished where they wanted, Daugherty was pleased with the solid performance of the two freshmen. Meg Gilley shot a 236 (81-76-79) tying for 14th place overall, while Alisha Matthews shot a 239 (81-79-79) to tie for 23rd.
Senior Braidy Hood led the Salukis with 235 (77-77-81) joining Gilley in the top-20 with a 13th overall finish. The Salukis' other senior on the trip, Kate Laegeler, finished with a 250 (83-83-84) and Alex Anderson shot a 268 (96-80-92).
"This was a good challenge for the team," said Daugherty. "Especially with the Saluki Invitational coming up at the end of the month."
The Salukis will host the 15th annual Saluki Invitational March 29-30 at Hickory Ridge.
