CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Office of the Associate Chancellor for Diversity and the Director of Athletics at Southern Illinois University have developed a unique opportunity for graduate students at Southern Illinois University.
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is now accepting applications for the Diversifying Athletic Administration in Higher Education Internship Program in Saluki Athletics.
"We are pleased to enter into the second year of our partnership with the Office of Diversity and Equity with this very important and unique program," Director of Athletics Mario Moccia said. "Offering a paid internship to a historically underrepresented group of individuals in the Department of Athletics is something that we felt was the right thing to do as well as a being a cutting edge program that shows Southern Illinois University is committed to diversity at the institutional level and the departmental level. Our first intern Anthony Williams has done an outstanding job and is poised to receive a full time position in the field of intercollegiate athletics which is exactly what this program is designed to do."
The primary purpose of the internship is to provide students with first-hand experience in athletic administration. In addition, Southern Illinois University is dedicated to diversifying Intercollegiate Athletics on a national scale. As such, the department has created this opportunity for underrepresented populations in higher education who are pursuing a career in athletic administration.
"There are athletes who choose not to play organized sports, but are interested in persuing other opportunities in the field," Associate Chancellor for Diversity and Equity Dr. Linda McCabe-Smith said. "This program provides guidance and experiences to channel their passions into nontraditional leadership roles and administrative components of athletics. In other words, we need to continue to fuel the passion with choices and opportunities."
In the first semester of William's appointment he spent time working in the compliance, development, business, facilities and academic offices. At the conclusion of his initial placements, he chose facilities and game operations to complete his internship experience.
"My experience at SIU has been unique," Williams said. "I look forward to taking what I've learned and using it to acquire a job in athletic administration at a well-respected university."
