Track and Field travels to Louisville for Mideast Regionals

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois track and field teams will travel to Louisville for the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional at Cardinal Park Friday and Saturday May 29-30. The Salukis will take 17 athletes to compete in 16 events.

Two-time All-American Bianca Stuart makes her third trip to regionals in the long jump, ranked second in the event.

Cross country All-American Jeff Schirmer, already qualified for nationals in the 10,000-meter run, will compete in the 5,000-meter run, ranked 26th.

Jake Deiters carries the top regional ranking for the men, 12th in the discus throw, entering the weekend.

Sasha Leeth and Gwen Berry, both indoor national qualifiers in the weight throw, rank seventh and eighth in the hammer throw. Freshman Jeneva McCall regionally qualified in three events, but will only compete in two. She is ranked fourth in the Mideast Region in the discus. Berry and McCall will also compete in the shot put.

Meredith Hayes will compete in the 100-meter hurdles for the Salukis, ranked 10th in the region.

Top five regional finishes automatically advance to the national meet. The at-large selections will be made on June 2 by the Track and Field Subcommittee.
