PEORIA, Ill. - Right-hander Andrew Dunn pitched the first complete game of his career and Scott Elmendorf went 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI to lead Southern Illinois University (20-25, 8-9) to a 11-1 win over Bradley (15-27, 2-13) Sunday at O'Brien Field.
SIU earned its first series win in Peoria since 2003. The Salukis also beat the Braves by 10 or more runs on the road for the first time since 1981.
A native of Marion, Dunn (6-4) scattered four hits and allowed one run in eight innings, the longest outing of his career. He also recorded four strikeouts, walked none and faced 27 hitters, only three over the minimum. Dunn retired BU in order in each of the third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings, as well.
SIU staked Dunn to a 5-0 lead when it jumped all over right-hander Justin Ziegler in the first inning.
The Salukis batted around to score five runs on five hits and an error. Elmendorf singled to center and went to third when Mark Kelly doubled down the left field line. Shortly after BU catcher Kevin Sullivan dropped a foul ball behind home plate, Michael Stalter drove in Elmendorf on a single to left. A double by Chris Serritella, groundball by Tyler Bullock and single by Jordan Sivertsen led to three more runs.
Ziegler (1-2) left the game after just one inning.
After SIU tacked on another run in the second and two more in the third, Bullock homered to give the Dawgs a 9-0 lead in the seventh.
Bullock delivered a mammoth blast off the street which lies outside the ballpark beyond the right field wall. The home run marked Bullock's team-high eighth of the season. He now leads the Salukis with a .390 batting average, six home runs and 18 RBI in league play.
BU wrecked Dunn's shutout bid when Adam Kimble homered with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
The Dawgs then polished off the Braves when Tony Lepore and Elmendorf scored in the eighth. Lepore doubled and touched home on Elmendorf's single to right. Elmendorf later scored on a two-out single by Stalter to cap the 11-1 victory.
SIU's 11 runs and 16 hits marked the most in a Valley game this season.
Elmendorf paved the way with five hits, while Stalter followed with three hits and a game-high three RBI. Elmendorf became the first Saluki to get five hits in a game this year. He is also the first to go 5-for-5 in a game since Aaron Roberts accomplished the feat vs. Murray State on Mar. 21, 2007. Roberts saw his 12-game hitting streak end with a 0-for-3 performance today.
SIU breaks for final exams before hosting Wichita State. The Salukis and Shockers open a three-game series next Friday at 3 p.m., CT.
