Men's Tennis Continues Play at Hoosier Classic

Bloomington, Ind. - The SIU men's tennis team continued play Saturday at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind.
Freshman >Brandon Florez continued to impress, as he won his second match of the day over Western Michigan's Kazuya Komada 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, after falling to Santiago Gruter of Indiana earlier in the day. Florez will vie for 5th place tomorrow in the Singles Flight #1 against Jeremy Langer of Indiana.
In other singles action, >Falk DeBeenhouwer triumphed over Daniel Klingenberg of IUPUI, before falling to Louisville's Alejandro Calligari 7-5, 6-3 in the consolation semi-finals of Singles Flight #1. In Flight #2, Orhan Spahic fell to IUPUI's Deon Shafer 6-3, 7-6, before rebounding to defeat John Haley of Cleveland State 6-4, 6-4. ChikarChikara Kidera prevailed against Louisville's Sumit-Prakash Gupta 6-3, 6-2, but fell to Ryan Hamning of Cleveland State 6-1, 6-4. Flight #3 saw Pavlo Buryi lose to IUPUI's Nick Volz 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, and Nathan Martin of Morehead State 7-5, 6-4. In Flight #4, Jordan Snyder was defeated by Brain Starr of Xavier 6-3, 6-1, but bested Cleveland State's Aris Spiritos 6-1, 7-5.
Meanwhile, in the doubles competition, Lucas Waked and DeBeenhouwer fell to Louisville's duo of Gupta and Adam Donaldson, 8-3. In addition, Spahic and Anton Leonenko were defeated by Richard Canelas and Chris Herrlinger of Xavier, 8-6. Kidera and Florez fell to Bobby Deye and Brian Starr, 8-3, then fell to Cleveland State's Haley and John Klepatz, 8-6. Finally, the combo of Buryi and Snyder defeated Butler's Ben Shafer and David Dolins, 8-6, then fell were bettered by Xavier's Anthony Palmenter and J.T. Torbeck, 8-2.
"I am happy that our new guys were able to get their first wins," noted head coach Dann Nelson. "We know that we have a lot to work on before our next tournament. We have to do a better job of taking advantage of opportunities to wins games, sets and matches."
"Our focus will be to improve our `match readiness' to become tournament tough. We have a young team and we make freshman mistakes, but our players are hungry for success and they work extremely hard so we must be patient and in time the wins will follow."
