PEORIA, Ill. - The Saluki cross country teams ended their regular season on a strong note in Peoria, Ill., as the men finished second and the women notched ninth place at the Bradley Classic.
On the men's side, both Dan Dunbar (fourth) and Neal Anderson (tenth) posted top ten finishes, allowing the Saluki men to finish just behind Big Ten foe Iowa in the final team standings.
"The men had a good day," said head coach Matt Sparks. "We would have liked to have been more competitive with Iowa, but to beat the other conference teams was very promising. We've seen all the MVC schools except for Indiana State and that's who we have to beat for conference."
In addition, four other men's runners posted top 50 finishes on the grueling Newman Golf Course, as Zach Dahleen (24th), Kyle Kirchner (34th), and Lucas Cherry (35th) both brought up third through fifth for the Dawgs.
Meanwhile, the women's team was keyed by seniors Emily Toennies and Megan Hoelscher, who finished fifth and 14th, respectively.
"It was exciting to see the women compete with Bradley Drake and Northern Iowa," Sparks said. "We were within 15 points of beating Bradley - arguably the fourth best team in the conference -, so it gives us something to work on in the next two weeks."
Junior Jamie Pfister recorded the other top 50 women's finish for SIU, coming in at 21st with a time of 22:09.
The Saluki cross country teams will be in action again in two weeks, as they head to Augusta, Kan., for the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
