LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Southern Illinois cross country team held their own Saturday in Louisville, Ky., as both the men's and women's team both posted top fifty finishes in the south's largest cross country meet.
"It was a different experience for both teams with 300 people on both sides," said head coach Matt Sparks. "Our leaders on the men's side competed very well. Sixth place is not as high as we wanted to finish, but it's a good starting point for the competitive part of our season."
On the men's side, Dan Dunbar paced the Salukis with a 13th place finish, timing in at 24:01.29. Coming in behind the senior from O'Fallon, Ill., was Neal Anderson, whose time of 24:14.38 was good for 21st place, and Kyle Kirchner, who finished 78th with a time of 24:56.45.
The Saluki men came in sixth place out of 38, beating out schools like Georgia, Missouri, Kentucky, and Illinois State.
Emily Toennies led the women's team with a 33rd place finish in 17:45.24. Meanwhile, fellow senior Megan Hoelscher was just shy of a top 50 placing, coming in at 51st with a time of 18:00.26.
Overall, the women's team finished 22nd in the field of 35.
"From an individual perspective, we got to see good runners on both the men's and women's side," Sparks said. "We got to see the best from Illinois State and what they will have to offer at conference."
The team will have the next week off before they head to Peoria for the Bradley Classic on Friday, October 15.
