ST. LOUIS - Dan Dunbar of Southern Illinois University and Kate Chybowski (pronounced chuh-BOW-skee) of the University of Evansville have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Dunbar and Chybowski were honored for their performances during the period of October 11-17.
Now in its 12th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A member of the Southern Illinois men's cross country team, Dunbar, a senior from O'Fallon, Ill., was the best finisher among all MVC runners, as the Salukis placed second of 21 teams at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., on Oct. 15.
The three-time MVC Cross Country Male Athlete of the Week, Dunbar, who has a 3.878 cumulative grade-point average in aviation flight, finished fourth on the 8K Newman Golf Course in a time of 24:12.00 against a field that included runners from DePaul, Missouri, Illinois State and Northern Iowa among others.
A member of the Evansville women's tennis team, Chybowski, a senior from Appleton, Wis., became the first Purple Ace player in 11 years to advance to the final eight of the prestigious ITA Regional Championships at Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 14-17.
Chybowski, who has a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average in biology, defeated Vanderbilt's Kelly Radeva (6-3, 6-2), Middle Tennessee's Yuri Nomoto (6-3, 6-1) and Memphis' Courtney Collins (6-3, 7-5). A two-time All-MVC player, Chybowski fell to Vanderbilt's Chelsea Preeg (6-2, 2-6, 4-6) in the quarterfinals.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
